At the end of 1999 , when the kids were 3-11 we purchased and moved to my husband's family cattle property NW of Charters Towers. It's taken me 20 years of "life" here, to finally start some of my many ideas I have accumulated over the years.
"Memories of Me" is one of those ideas ! It was inspired by my affinity with and passion for the elderly, especially once my Mum started to suffer from dementia and I was visiting her and her peers in Aged care homes in Brisbane. Being involved in a family grazing enterprise and therefore unable to be a volunteer in person, I decided the time was right to give up some of my time for a good cause from a distance. By reading a template for memory in a classy format, I hope to reach many many more people than I could ever reach in person. Especially once the elderly live in a community situation, for them to show who they really are as an individual can add so much to their twilight years. If insidious diseases of the brain become a part of their life, this is not an easy task. Nearly always there are nowhere near enough staff, volunteers or time for anyone to make this happen.
Although it will take a bit of effort to fill some or all of the pages, my dream is that the end result is an encyclopedia of that person's life....for their memory to be jolted, for family to learn, for carer's to refer to and ultimately as a wonderful (if cluttered) personal keepsake once a loved one has passed.
